Empirical correlation for a central hole of diameter d in a plate of width W transverse to the load.

d — hole diameter; W — gross plate width perpendicular to the loading direction

Nominal stress σnom[MPa]

Validity domain: 0.01 ≤ d/W ≤ 0.5; central hole, thin plate and uniaxial tension.
Nominal-stress basis: Average net-section stress based on (W − d)t
Correlation: Kt = 3 − 3.14x + 3.667x² − 1.527x³; x = d/W
Assumptions: Kt is referenced to net-section stress and must not be applied directly to gross-section stress.
